c2c shrug

I love to crochet shrugs!

They are the perfect little item to wear when the weather is slightly

chilly, right?

I’ve always wanted to try crocheting one of this and here it is!

For my new design I used the corner-to-corner(c2c) method and a

wonderful mohair yarn. The pattern is super easy to work up and on

the internet there are a lot of video and photo tutorials for free that

show you the basic technique of c2c crochet.

* I'm happy to announce that my c2c shrug is the runner up of the

Crochet Something Contest 2018 hosted by Kelbourne Woolens

in the category best garment *

Step 1 - material

This is what you need:

- mohair yarn, approx. 10 skeins à 25 g

- crochet hook 5 mm

- scissors

- measuring tape

- marker

Let’s start!

Step 3 - decreasing

When I reached a edge of approx. 99 cm I started with the decreasing:

  • instead of chaining 6, turn work and slip stitch in each double crochet

  • slip stitch into ch-3 turning chain

  • chain 3

  • double crochet 3 in ch-3 turning chain of previous row

Finally I crocheted a 99 x 99 cm big square.

Step 5 - seam & collar
Step 2 - increase

I start with the c2c increasing. Any corner-to-corner crochet project will always begin with increase rows. Here’s a little step-by-step photo tutorial of the increase.

Step 4 - border

1st round of border:

  • slip stitch around your hook

  • insert hook through a gap between 2 of your blocks

  • single crochet in this gap

  • chain 2 and single crochet in next gap between blocks

  • continue to chain 2 and single crochet in each gap across until reach a corner

  • in the corner single crochet, chain 3, single crochet

  • continue all the way around and join with slip stitch to first single crochet

2nd round of border:

  • join with a slip stitch in any single crochet and chain 3

  • 2 double crochets in chain 2 space from previous round

  • double crochet in next single crochet, 2 double crochets in next chain 2 space

  • continue until reach 1st corner

  • 2 double crochets in the corner, chain 1, 2 double crochets - continue until reach final chain 2 space

  • slip stitch in top of chain 3

Step 6 - sleeves

Next I fold the large square in half.

I seam up the sides to leave an arm hole and crochet up the sides 2/3 from bottom to top (approx. 15 cm for each side of the arm hole).

I open up the shrug so the arm holes are in the middle. Now I crochet around the entire opening with 10 rounds of front post double crochets.

Collar is now complete!

For the sleeves I alternated front post double crochets with back post double crochets creating a ribbed effect with a total of 16 rounds.

As a finishing touch, I sewed a ultraleather garment tag to my shrug - it’s so neat having my own label and “brand”!

I hope you enjoyed seeing the design process behind my c2c shrug. Let me know if you have any questions ok?

A few more pictures in the colors yellow and grey for you. Do you notice the difference between the yellow one and the other colors?

For the yellow shrug I alternated front post double crochets with back post double crochets creating a ribbed effect like for the sleeves.

I wanted to try other yarns and made this beautiful shrug with Landlust Merino 180 yarn by Lanna Grossa in red and CHARITY yarn by Veronika Hug in orange for the collar and sleeves.

I adore how this romantic and elegant shrug turned out!

Enjoy crocheting this shrug as much as I did and feel free to share it with me here and on Facebook or Instagram.
